Are you ready to watch a movie that DOESN'T involved sitting on your couch in your pjs? This weekend we found the cutest old fashioned drive-in move theater just down the road, right outside of LA! Mission Tiki Drive-in Theater in Montclair, CA (about 45 minutes east of downtown LA) is the PERFECT solution for a Covid safe night out on the town! New social distancing rules make sure that no cars are parked closer than 10 feet apart and you can relax and enjoy the big screen experience knowing you're being safe and responsible. Open since 1956 and completely refurbished in 2006 with new screens and all the latest technology (you listen to the movie though your FM radio speakers) they still kept the charm of the original and the Tiki hut theme! With 4 screen and 8 movies to choose from, there is something for everyone. Your ticket gets you into any double feature and the night we went the choices were Bloodshot/The Invisible Man, Trolls World Tour/Sonic the Hedgehog and Knives Out/The Hunt and True History of the Kelly Gang/Birds of Prey.
The box office opens one hour before show time Mon-Thursday and one and a half hours before on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $10 per adult and $1 for children ages 5-9. I don't think there is a better night out bargain in all of California!
There is a full service concession stand where you can get pizza, burgers, Mexican food and all the traditional movie fare - but we chose to bring our own food and drinks and they are perfect fine with that!
OUR EXPERIENCE
We decided to go on a Saturday night and planned to pick up take-out and arrive when the box office opened an hour and 1/2 before show time. Well... we couldn't decide what to eat and spent an hour "debating" it until we finally resorted to the lowest common denominator of Dominos - so we actually got there about 10 minutes before the first show started. No issues though - after a short wait in the car line, we found a great place to park and even had time for a couple of photos before the sun set and the movie started.
Under cover of darkness (and a blanket), I changed into some comfy sweats , dropped the convertible top and settled in to watch Vin Diesel get his revenge in "Bloodshot" (surprisingly I'd give it a 7/10) and a really good and spooky "Invisible Man" (9/10).
If you don't think you (or the kids) have the patience for 4-5 hours of movie watching, you can go to just the first movie and leave, or just show up in time to see the second. If you want to start your night a little later, they show the first movie again AFTER the second one (does that make sense?) so you can come later and watch the second one and then the first show afterwards!
